This is one of the simple yet important things to know:
1) Open Disk Utility (Applications => Utilities => Disk Utility)
2) Choose a Hard drive or hard drive partition from side bar of Disk Utility.
3) Go to the "Erase" tab.
4) Make sure the format selected is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
5) Press "Erase..." button
be sure not to format your OS partition![]()

I think the plain erase option is deceitful. It makes it sound like nothing was being erased, so I picked the zero-out option, and it took forever! ugh.

zero pass means just that.. writes EVERY bit of the hard drive to a zero, if its already a zero it will do it again!

Open Disk Utility (Applications => Utilities => Disk Utility)

Before formatting of the drive do not forget to make the back up else use free mac data recovery software to recover the data lost due to formatting.
